Dress up Your Flip Flops

Now is a good time to pick up flip-flops in lots of fun colors. They have begun to go on sale (and will be even cheaper as the end of the season nears). Grab some for now and pick up some a bit larger for next year. Then, have fun decorating them and adding your own personal touch to each pair.

Pick up yarn in lots of fun colors to go with the colors of your flip-flops. Choose smooth, textured, fluffy, or furry yarn, in solid or corrugated colors. Grab some narrow, flat lace, ribbon, and fun fabric too.

Start by tying a knot at one end of the flip-flop strap. Wrap the yarn or other material around the strap snugly, overlapping each length by just a bit. Continue up and over, down the other side, and tie another secure know. Trim away excess and tuck the end into the wrapped strands.

If you decide to use fabric, cut it into narrow strips and wrap as described above. If you like, you can try another method. Instead of wrapping long strands, cut shorter strips about 3-4” long and tie each one around the strap, making a firm knot. For a more interesting look, use pinking shears or tear the strips instead of cutting them.

You can paint flip-flops too. Stencil on some fun designs and fill them in with paint pens, model paint, or for a really fun touch, try using nail polish. Let your imagination run wild. Mix colors, fabrics, and styles to come up with something cool.

You can also use ribbon and lace in other ways or use beads to decorate your flip-flops as described in Fourth of July Footwear (scroll down to the Festive Flip Flops section). You don’t have to stick to red, white, and blue; you can use any colors you like.
