Easter and Marriage

Easter means different things to different people. As I’ve read a couple of other blogs I see some of those different traditions in families come out. To some people it means Easter bunnies and Easter egg hunts. To others it means church. Sometimes there is a combining of the two.

In our marriage and those of our son and daughter and their spouses, it means church, remembering the first Easter and what Easter is all about – the death and resurrection of Jesus.

One couple I know who are still on their L plates in their marriage has started a tradition of celebrating a Passover meal. They are not Jewish but they recognize the deep connection between the Jewish Passover feast and how Jesus became the ultimate Passover lamb on that first Easter, when his blood was shed for us. So they had their dinner with lamb, herbs and unleavened bread read bible readings from Jeremiah and other places.

The bread was hidden by the husband and the wife had to seek out the bread which was a little fun inclusion which echoed to some extent the Jewish idea. They’re thinking that this Passover meal will become a regular Easter tradition in their marriage.

For Mick and me, church is the priority. Our Good Friday service yesterday, since were a few hours ahead here in Australia, was well attended as it always is though with lots of visitors as well. That’s what happens when you live in popular tourist spot.

As we went to church the caravan parks and camping grounds was massed with tents. One house even had three tents on the front lawn. To many people Easter means little more than a few days holiday and an excuse to get away for a while.

Mick and I rarely go away at Easter. To us Easter means church and Iwhat a joy it is to share the same faith and go to church as a couple. Our service yesterday was particularly beautiful with several songs and hymns that brought out the huge cost Jesus paid on the cross.
I’d love to hear what traditions do you observe in your marriage at Easter?
