Have you ever blown-out the inside of an egg? I was 30 years old when I first executed the common crafting practice. Once I mastered the egg hollowing process, I promised that each Easter I would put my abilities to good use and create a homemade craft project featuring blown-out eggs.
This year I am making a hanging welcome sign crafted from hollow decorated eggs. If you are new to the world of blown-out eggs, I’ve included detailed instructions below:
TO HOLLOW OUT AN EGG:
Shake the egg to break up the yolk.
Place egg on its side on a hard surface.
Use a needle or the tip of a sharp skewer and gently apply pressure to one end of the egg. Carefully turn the skewer into the egg.
Next, make a hole in the other end of the egg using the same method.
Blow into one end of the egg over a bowl.
After the yolk and white runs out of the shell, rinse the egg in water, shake and blow out again, then pat dry.
Let the eggs dry completely before proceeding with the following project.
EASTER EGG WELCOME SIGN
Materials:
One dozen blown-out eggs
12 Buttons
Ribbon
Needle
Paint
Directions:
Take the blown out eggs, and gently make a hole into the sides of each egg (about 1 inch down from the top).
Cut a piece of ribbon about 36 inches long.
Tie a knot in the ribbon about 9 inches from one end. (Make sure it is a big enough knot that it won’t slip through the hole in the egg)
Thread a needle with the other end of the ribbon.
Insert the needle through the sides of the first egg, then pull the ribbon through until the knot rests against the egg.
Insert the needle through the buttonholes of the first button, then push the button onto the ribbon until its edge is resting against the side of the first egg.
Feed the needle through the sides of the next egg, pushing it along until it is up against the edge of the button.
Repeat the steps until you’re done with all the eggs and buttons, then tie a knot at the end.
Finally, paint the letters “W-E-L-C-O-M-E” on the middle eggs and embellish the others with other decorations of your liking.
