Easy Homemade Father’s Day Gifts

FOX News recently ran a story on how dads typically get the shaft on Father’s Day. According to those interviewed for the story (mainly bitter fathers), when it comes to showing dad how much we love him, neckties, paperweights, and key chains, usually say it all. Conversely on Mother’s Day, mom is showered with flowers, jewels and trips to the spa.

Growing up, my dad insisted that all Father’s Day gifts be strictly homemade. He didn’t want any money to be spent purchasing him presents, so my brothers and I were forced to hone our craft skills and create paper, yarn and glitter masterpieces.

The following easy project is nicer than any homemade gift I ever made for my dad. What’s more, it’s not only cute, but it’s practical too.

TENNIS BALL PENCIL HOLDER

Materials:

Knife

Tennis ball

Black googly eyes

Black yarn

Black pom pom

Pencil

Craft glue

Plastic ring

Directions:

Use the utility knife (adults should help with this step if kids are involved) and cut a medium-sized slit all the way through the front of the tennis ball, to create a mouth.

Spread a generous amount of glue on the plastic ring.

Press the plastic ring on the bottom of the tennis ball, so it will sit up when the craft is finished.

Cut five 2-inch pieces of black yarn and tie one of the pieces around the middle of the others. This will be the hair for the tennis ball’s head.

Spread a generous amount of glue on the middle part of the hair and press it to the top of the tennis ball.

Spread glue on the back of the eyes and apply to the ball.

Spread glue on the pom pom and apply to the ball below the eyes-—this will be the nose.

Allow glue to dry thoroughly, then and insert a pencil in its mouth by squeezing the sides of the tennis ball until it opens wide enough to fit the pencil.

Gift-wrap and present to dad on Father’s Day.
