Over the years, I’ve tried a number of things to keep our kitchen floor clean. For a while there, it seemed like the best results and convenience were had by the most expensive systems. Fortunately, there are ways around the expense. Try one of the following ideas.
The Cheapest
An old fashioned floor scrub will be the cheapest. It only requires a bucket (or just a sink), some soap and something to apply the soap, from a brush to an old towel. You have to get down on your hands and knees and scrub and then rinse the floors with clean damp rag. It takes a lot of work, but I’ve found that it gives you the best most sparkling clean for the least amount of money.
The Quickest
The Swiffer systems, either the wet or dry systems are very convenience, but the pads and the solution gets really expensive, especially if you are diligent about keeping your kitchen floor clean. There are batteries, solution and the pads, as well as the purchase of the original starter kit. To reduce the cost, you can buy in bulk and use coupons. The design of the system makes it difficult to use your own solution, unless you squirt it on the floor yourself. You can make your own pads, though. Cut down rags for the wet system and reuse dryer sheets (previously used ones are fine) for the dry system.
A Good Compromise
My current favorite way to clean my kitchen floors is by using a small steam vac. There was the initial cost of the system, bought on sale, but it requires no cleaning solution or chemicals at all, instead you can use water (steam) to clean and sanitize. You’ll spend a tiny bit in electricity each time you use it. The pads are reusable. You have to wash them in your machine by themselves, so make sure you have enough of them to make it worth running a small load.The system can also be used on other surfaces, including freshening up carpet.
