Embracing Embellishments

If it weren’t for embellishments, then scrapbooks would be little more than glorified photo albums. Stickers, stamps, die cuts, brads, and flocking powder help add spice to scrapbook designs. What’s more, they help enhance other materials featured on a page.

For example, if you are working on a Christmas-themed layout you could use a Santa Claus tag to jazz up a section on holiday gifts. Likewise, embellishments that include quotes or famous sayings can help add intrigue to a journaling block. The embellishment can also serve as inspiration should you be suffering from writer’s block.

Colorful embellishments or ones that feature different textures add visual appeal to a scrapbook layout, particularly on pages where the photos are a bit boring. What’s more, you can use extra embellishments on layouts where you lack photos. For example, if you want to scrap a trip to a concert, but you were not allowed to snap pictures during the performance, you could use different embellishments to make up for the missing images.

Scrappers on a budget may shy away from using a lot of embellishments on their layouts, but there are many ways you can spice up your designs without breaking the bank. Frugal scrapbookers make their own embellishments from leftover paper or cardstock. For example, you can use patterned paper scraps to decorate sketches of a pumpkin, heart or Christmas tree. Or consider trimming sheets of patterned paper with decorative edged scissors, such as scallop or wave edges, and then layer the strips on the page to create a ruffled background.

In addition, you can use thin strips of patterned paper as a faux ribbon accent. Simply secure each partially folded loop with a small glue dot, and then add small notches at the edge of your strip to make a pretty embellishment for a birthday or Christmas-themed page.
