Emotional Rollercoaster of Single Parenting

After a divorce it may seem utterly impossible to find happiness in your life, at least right at first. In the beginning, your emotions are consuming you. You can’t seem to focus on anything else. Your heart aches for how things should have been and it aches even more when you see what your children are going through. People tell you that there will be a light at the end of the tunnel, but no matter how hard you try you can’t seem to find it. You feel as if you are constantly surrounded by darkness with no hope of ever pulling out.

As time goes on the clouds seem to part little by little. The sun shines through and the darkness subsides, if even for a moment. There may still be days that are filled with confusion and sadness. This is natural as you are embarking on your journey of single parenthood. As a single parent you often feel like your emotions are on a never ending rollercoaster. It isn’t an easy ride. Raising children is hard work; doing it alone is even harder. There will be days when you feel completely inadequate. You will make mistakes along the way and you will learn from them.

There will be moments when you want to rip your hair out and others when you want nothing more than to curl up in a ball and cry. There will also be moments of pure joy, when you look at your children and know without a doubt that they are the most precious gems in the entire world. There will be sleepless nights, with no one to turn to. There will be mornings that you can hardly bear the thought of facing yet another day of parenting alone. Then there will be days when you look at your children with pride, knowing that you are raising some amazing little children, and that is your light at the end of the tunnel.
