End of the Garage Sale: What Do I Do With All This Stuff?

When your garage sale is finally over, you can feel a sense of relief, but it can also be stressful. There are many decisions that have to be made, and generally, the depend on whether you plan to continue the sale at a later date.

Having Another Sale

Sometimes, a garage sale will be planned again for the next day, or the following weekend. In fact often, you might plan to have another garage sale at a much later date. If you fall under this category, the items that remain at the end of the sale, will need some attention. I recommend gathering boxes and containers to store the items in. As you place each item into the box, consider why it might not have sold. Was the price to high? Is there something wrong with it? Is it a seasonal type item? For instance, Winter clothes at a summer sale, beach toys at a fall sale.

In addition, when packing up your boxes, store similar items together. This will make it easier to set up, the next time around. It is also recommended that you keep the price tags in place, unless you plan to reduce or raise the price.

No More Sales

If, like many other garage sale sellers, you have decided that this garage sale is your last, you have some decisions to make about the items that you have remaining. First, consider donations. If you have clothing, donate to a clothing closet. If you have furniture, call around and have someone come pick up the remaining items. Many community centers, shelters and charity organizations, collect gently used items throughout the year. Contact one of these places, and see what items you might be able to donate. You might also consider Freecyle.org – you would be amazed at what you can get rid of, that other people want.

You can also consider giving it away to friends and family, or even just tossing it. I hesitate to recommend tossing it, because I am a firm believer in what is one man’s junk, is another man’s treasure.
