So much for an extended January thaw.
Our days basking in record warmth are about to come to an abrupt end. According to weather forecasters, 24 hours from now we’ll be back in the teens and buried under several inches of snow.
Sigh!
On the bright side, I can now resume designing my winter-themed scrapbook layouts with photos that include real snow, ice and sleet, instead of brown grass and bare trees.
Nearly a decade ago my mom and I started a tradition of creating Year-in-Review scrapbooks. However, instead of waiting until the last week of December to design each page, we craft the layouts at the end of each month.
January’s layouts typically include seasonal touches inspired by the nasty winter weather. For example, last year I used different sized paper punches and some leftover white cardstock to build a lopsided snowman. I embellished my paper Frosty with tiny buttons and fabric scraps. My mom did the same, but kicked it up a notch by using tiny paper doll sweaters, mittens, and scarves to accent her family of snow people.
If you prefer to skip the snowmen and stick with a basic background, consider using cotton balls to create the appearance of fresh snow on silver or blue scrapbook paper. Or, invest in some blue patterned paper and enhance it with a border made from ribbon stamped with tiny snowflakes. You can really make the snowflakes pop by using chalk, white pencils or paint around the edges of the design. Applying glitter or flocking powder will also add pizzazz to your pages.
Finally, keep the winter theme going by creating page titles with icicle-shaped fonts or ones that feature snowmen holding different letters. “Let it Snow,” “Some of My Best Friends are Flakes,” and “Walking in a Winter Wonderland” are just some of the many seasonal title options you have to choose from when creating a winter-themed layout.
