Evidence: The Sin of Biblical People

This evidence for the existence of God was recently brought to my attention and I believe it is yet another example of the abundance of knowledge the world has for the Lord.

Consider a normal history book. For the most part, do history books speak about the good and bad qualities and characteristics of heroes? Not usually. Most history books speak highly of individuals who are known for wonderful accomplishments, and leave the darker side of these individuals’ out (or barely speak of it at all). This is where the Bible greatly differs from many history books.

The Bible is a history book. However, when the Bible speaks of heroes or great men of faith are the people only spoken about as good men, with no flaws or sins of their own? This is hardly the case. The Bible speaks truthfully about these men. Romans 3:23 states: “for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” The Bible is very unique in its depiction of prominent figures, unlike ordinary history books. There are many, many example of this throughout the Bible. I have listed a few below.

  1. Moses. Moses is mentioned in detail in Hebrews 11 as one of the great men of faith. However, Moses was not a perfect man: Moses was afraid, and he sinned against the Lord. In the first few chapters of Exodus the Bible tells of how Moses was afraid to lead the people out of Egypt. In Numbers 20 the Bible tells of how Moses directly disobeyed the Lord.
  2. King David. David was a man after God’s own heart (1st Samuel 13:14), yet he committed many terrible sins. In 2nd Samuel 11, David lusts after a woman named Bathsheba and commits adultery with her while her husband is away at war. Bathsheba becomes pregnant from the adultery and David tries to cover up their sin. When he is unable to cover up the sin, David has Bathsheba’s husband placed on the front lines in battle so that he will be killed.
  3. Peter. Peter was one of Jesus’ twelve apostles. Yet Peter failed in ways as well. The gospel accounts speak of Peter’s denial of Christ before His crucifixion. Galatians 2 speaks of Peter’s hypocrisy.
