Exciting Upcoming Disney Films

I’ve missed talking about Disney movies. A lot has gone on in the parks lately so I’ve focused on them, but it felt so good earlier this week to ditch all of that and speculate on “Maleficent.” After all, the movies are the true reason why we’re Disney fans, right?

I’m waiting until this weekend to see “Brave,” so I can go with my two best friends, but there’s still plenty of other Disney movie news to talk about in the interim. June’s seen the release of two trailers for forthcoming Disney movies, so let’s get watching.

The first is for next year’s Pixar film, “Monsters University.” I’d complain more about another sequel, but after that we’re supposed to get three original films in a row. If I’ve got to bargain with you, Bob Iger, for new content over franchise-pandering, then I guess I’ll take the proffered deal. At least’s it’s not another “Cars” film.

We’ve got a year until the release of “Monsters University” so obviously this trailer’s more of a teaser, not revealing any actual plot. But who cares, when what we’ve got is so fun? The roots of Mike and Sully’s friendship: a college prank war. All right, in the trailer it looks like so far Mike’s the only one who’s the butt of any jokes, but he’ll have to retaliate, right? I mean, Sully turned him into a living disco ball, this means war! I bet they start off as enemies, but are thrown into crazy circumstances through which they emerge as friends.

So maybe the movie sounds a little predictable (or at least the fake potential movie I just made up in the last paragraph). The thing about “Monsters Inc.” is that I say I love it and vehemently defend it, but I rarely re-watch it. When I do I find myself getting bored in the middle. But hey, I’m feeling placid between the promise of “Brave” and the second trailer I’m about to cover, so Pixar could offer me even a so-so movie and I’d be happy, especially if its future movies are as awesome as the they sound. I’m just glad they’re not making another “Cars.” Or trying to bring Boo back; as much as I loved her the story ended in a beautiful place.

But “Wreck-It Ralph,” oh, “Wreck-It Ralph,” you’d better not break my heart. Or at least you better do so in a good way, like “Up.” Your trailer looks even better than the early promos promised, and I absolutely can’t wait. Who needs princesses or fantasy worlds when audiences get to wander through a candy land of video game settings, especially when one of those settings actually is a candy land?

I’m a gamer; “Wreck-It Ralph” is pandering directly to me. And I don’t even care, because I just saw Dr. Robotnik and Q-bert. Of course this being Disney (not Pixar, remember), I trust that there will be plenty in the movie for those who aren’t familiar with classic video games. That’s why it looks so great: fun references for gamers, but the trailer also promises adventure, heart, and humor that any casual viewer can enjoy.
