While I am a die hard scrapbook sticker fan, I also enjoy experimenting with different embellishments. However, since I adhere to a strict scrapbook budget, most of my experimenting takes place at workshops sponsored by my local scrapbook shop. During the last workshop I attended I had the chance to work with flocking powder and loved it.
Flocking powder is extremely versatile and not too expensive. I had the chance to sample Martha Stewart Crafts’ flocking powder and a few made by Stampendous, Inc. However, you can also find a number of different brands at places such as Hobby Lobby and Michaels Crafts.
The powder comes in a rainbow of colors, though if you are using it for the first time you might want to stick with neutral colors, such as cream, tan or gray. Once you get a feel for how the flocking powder works and how it can further personalize your layouts, then you can experiment with different colors. For example, I used pink and purple powder to embellish photos used on a Valentine’s Day layout. Personally, I was shocked by how far just a tiny jar of the powder goes. You don’t need much to spice up a layout.
Flocking powder is designed to give images a fuzzy appearance. It can also be used to add a velvet-like texture to photos and other embellishments. To use, simply cover your work area with a sheet of paper to collect any stray powder. Next, use a glue pen on the area of your layout you want to flock. If you are flocking a large area, then you might consider using a glue stamp pad. Once the adhesive is applied, carefully sprinkle on a layer of flocking powder. Just remember that a little powder goes a long way, so be sure to use a steady hand. Also, don’t be tempted to add another layer of powder until the first one has dried completely. Finally, if you want to be assured that your powder will stick firmly to your photo, run over it with a brayer.
