Experimenting With Different Textures

left

One of my favorite ways to add texture to a scrapbook layout is to incorporate a variety of fabrics to the page design. For example, in an effort to add flair to my daughter’s First Holy Communion memory album, I used real lace and lace paper to enhance the theme.

Several manufacturers have recently come out with paper that can be mixed with items to add more texture to layouts. Patterned paper with raised edges or lines for journaling can be found in a variety of colors. In addition, many online retailers offer paper that serves as an attractive background for embellishments made from gingham, canvas, burlap and flannel.

If you are just starting your experimentation with textures, I would highly suggest working with lace. Scrapbook.com offers a variety of lace paper, including a stunning blue and purple lace detailed sample which could easily be used to spice up a wedding, prom or anniversary-themed page design. In addition, Paper Wishes also features great lace paper options. The company shatters the stereotype associated wtih old fashioned lace. Instead, you can choose from hot pink, metallic-edged lace patterned paper. It’s definitely not your grandma’s doily-inspired lace pattern. Paper Wishes also carries lace trim, lace stamps and lace border stickers.

If you are looking for a place that will fill all your lace paper needs, whether they are traditional or a bit more daring, then I would suggest visiting KI Memories. The site is stocked with everything from delicate vintage-style lace paper to electric green lace trims. You can also find black paper with a fluorescent yellow lace pattern or white paper with lace outlined in a variety of shades, from red and blue to brown and purple.

For those intimidated by the added texture, start out easy. One of the simplest ways to use lace paper is to feature it in the background of photos or other embellishments. Lighter lace paper allows you to add hints of femininity. However, if you want to achieve a higher degree of contrast between the paper and your photos or mementos, then use a darker lace paper instead.
