Faith Books

All hail! Summer! A time for sun, sand, surf… and church picnics.

Our church’s annual summer picnic takes place in just a couple of weeks, and this year along with the games, food and music, the planning committee is also crafting a scrapbook featuring several major events, including Baptism, First Holy Communion, Confirmation, Christmas and Easter celebrations.

Religious-themed scrapbooks are nothing new; however, each year it seems there are more and more faith-related embellishments to choose from to make your memory book stand out. Of course, you don’t have to wait for the annual church picnic to assemble a faith or praise book. In my particular case, an announcement was made to the congregation weeks ago asking parishioners to please consider sharing personal photos taken at church-related events, so they could be included in the scrapbook. If you are planning to make a personal faith book, then customize your layouts so they reflect your relationship with God. You can do this via inspirational poems and favorite prayers.

Other layout ideas include highlighting your place of worship, your pastor, your favorite church hymns or specific choir performances. Journaling is also an integral part of a religious-themed scrapbook. While a picture is worth 1,000 words, the power of the written word, especially personal notes on how your faith impacts your entire life, is something you shouldn’t underestimate. If you are intimidated by the prospect of chronically your faith life, then use scripture passages or inspirational quotes from your pastor’s sermons to help you get started.

From there you can segue into how you worship, where you worship and who influences your faith life the most. You might also consider sharing any advice given to you by a spiritual advisor, especially if you have ever experienced a crisis of faith and learned important lessons in the process. Other ideas include listing your blessings and addressing how you pass your religious beliefs to your kids.
