Family Fun with Facial Recognition Software

Have you ever been told you look like a celebrity? My mom’s heard she looks like Shirley Jones (though I think she’s even prettier). My dad used to hear how he looked like Charles Bronson. When we lived in Southern California as teens and twenties, my little brother often made reservations with the last name Van Halen. He was mistaken for Eddie enough times. While there are no true doubles, I think a lot of us look alike.

We’ve been having a blast playing with facial recognition software. It compares different facial features to photos in their database. Of course, they’re using public use photos, so they’re mostly of television and movie stars. My youngest son and I sat here for two hours the other night, trying out different pictures we have. I was very relieved that Roseanne Barr didn’t come up as my match even once!

The most interesting thing I found was family resemblance. I’ve never considered my boys to look alike. David looks so much like my brother Michael while Elisha is the spitting image of his father. Different sides of the family. Yet almost every photo we uploaded had a match for David of Zac Hansen – AND a match of a younger Zac Hansen for Elisha. As their mom, I see their differences; but facially they are apparently very similar. I thought it was very interesting that whether I loaded pictures of them as toddlers or teens, most of the same comparables came up. Maybe we don’t really change that much after all.

Here’s who we most often came up as:
Val Kilmer married to (young) Kirstie Alley, with Uma Thurman, Zac Hansen, Owen Wilson, and Lara Flynn Boyle as children. What a family! Who do you resemble?
