A new product called Germbana is just hitting the streets in time for cold and flu season. The company claims it can fight bacteria and germs naturally through its scarves, face gators and gloves made with Fibrant™. According to germbana.com, Fibrant is “a revolutionary new anti-bacterial, super soft, breathable, anti-static fabric that has captured nature’s defense systems.” It contains natural anti bacterial fibers with no chemicals added.
So the question is do they work? Testing that was done by the University of Minnesota found that over 99% of the bacteria introduced to the fabric was gone within 24 hours. But bacteria and viruses are different and viruses are what cause the cold and flu. Plus, most of these germs die off within a few hours on their own anyway. So do Germbana accessories really make a difference? I think they could at least help.
My daughter has cystic fibrosis and needs to be protected from germs at all cost. I once said that if standing on my head every night for an hour might give her a better chance of staying healthy, I would do it. So why wouldn’t I try to protect her with Germbana products, especially once she is old enough to head off to school? Just the chance that these products could keep her healthy is worth any price to me.
While for right now the company is producing face gators, scares and gloves, in the future they plan to sell baby blankets, pillowcases, sporting wear, and floor blankets as well. Time will tell if the general public will buy into the idea that a fabric can naturally kill germs without exposing you to chemicals. While I would definitely be interested in gloves and blankets for my daughter, I will be doing further research and talking with my daughter’s specialist about these products and his opinions. But in my book, the idea is fantastic and will hopefully prove effective.
