Tina Turner was there, as was famed film director Robert Wilson, and scores of other fashionistas. Fashion Week has moved to Milan… and trendsetters are jostling for front row seats at some of the week’s most highly anticipated shows, including Giorgio Armani’s.
The famed designer drew a bevy of VIP’s when he showed off his Fall/Winter 2007 collection on Monday. His creations focused on muted shades with a myriad of glistening sequins. Fashion editors call Armani’s collection, “a dazzling display of feminine tones, from sparkling ballerina footwear to knitted caps dotted with dewdrop crystals.” Noticeably missing from the designer’s collection: pants. Rather, Armani focused on skirts (both loose and slender) and cropped jackets with soft shawl collars.
The designer’s evening look was described as “ultra-feminine” and featured creations including silk cocktail dresses and sequined gowns, both backless and others held together by delicate patent-leather straps. However, the piece that received the most attention was an evening gown of horizontally stitched Swarovski crystals.
On the other side of the fashion spectrum, designer to the stars, Dolce and Gabbana took a walk on the wild side during the presentation of their Fall/Winter 2007 collection.
The design team called their look: “Disco Cats.” It featured an animal-printed catwalk, disco music from Madonna’s early days, and models wearing mini skirts and silk gowns with spots. Also on view were black velvet tuxedo suits with pencil pants and stiff white shirts accentuated with high, gilded heels.
On final note: They may not have been unveiling a new fashion line, but the animal rights group, People for Ethical Treatment of Animals, or PETA made their presence felt in Milan as well. According to news reports, on Monday, PETA activists stormed the Burberry boutique in downtown Milan to protest the company’s use of fur. Several members of the group threw red paint at the shop window, but later told reporters that the protest was not meant to be “mean-spirited.” Rather they said it was done to “raise awareness and block the sale of furs.”
