Fat Tuesday is just a couple of days away, but the party is already well underway in New Orleans and other parts of the world. Mardi Gras celebrations are fun-filled, action-packed and brimming with vivid (or not so vivid) memories. All of the excitement leading up to Lent yields amazing material for scrapbooks.
A few years ago I scrapped a Mardi Gras-themed layout, and to this day, it’s one of the most colorful page designs I have. The celebration lends itself to eye-popping colors, such as bright purple, green and gold. If your embellishments are neon bright, then you might opt to use a black background page to set off your festive accessories. Don’t fall into the “black is boring” trap. Black scrapbook paper can be shiny or enhanced with glitter.
Given the elaborate nature of Mardi Gras, you will likely have a slew of party-type embellishments to add to your layouts, including: beads, sequins, masks, feathers, coins, confetti, crowns, jewels, and glitter. To further spice up your Fat Tuesday layouts, consider using paper streamers as page borders or using a metallic gel pen to freehand designs around the edges of the page. You can also create your own Mardi Gras bead border by punching circles from metallic paper. Use adhesive dots to stick them in place and then use loose feathers to fill in the blank spots.
For larger memorabilia or items that you don’t want to place adhesive to, simply place them in an envelope or store them in a page pocket. Most scrapbook stores sell clear envelopes that you can adhere to a page. Another option is to decorate a traditional envelope and place it on the page with double stick tape.
Another fun and easy idea is to save Mardi Gras masks and use them as photo frames. If the mask is too plain, simply add a few sequins or beads around the eye rims to give the frame some sparkle.
