Find Your Passion, or Fake it Until You Make It?

“Just find your passion”. If you’ve spent any time looking for home business opportunities, you’ve probably heard this piece of advice more than a few times. While we would all love to be making a great income doing something we are absolutely passionate about, it isn’t always that simple.

When I started my work-at-home journey, I was convinced that I would make a tremendous amount of money selling crafts and painting children’s furniture. After all, I enjoyed it, I was passionate about it, and (if you can stand a bit of bragging) I was pretty darn good at it. Ultimately, pursuing my passion as a home-based business probably netted me enough cash to treat myself to a deep dish pepperoni pizza at the local pizza joint.

Learning from my mistakes, I jumped into my second home business opportunity with a little less enthusiasm. I joined a popular skincare company as a direct selling representative. I didn’t like sales and I knew very little about the product line. Prior to joining my beauty routine was pretty pathetic. A little soap, a clean rag, some lip-gloss, mascara and a pony-tail holder was really all I needed. I was definitely NOT passionate about using a bunch of beauty products, much less selling them.

That being said, I was desperate to stay home with my daughter and knew the products were popular in my community. Instead of “find your passion”, my motto became “fake it until you make it”.

After my daughter was born I learned that my “passion” had nothing to do with starting a specific career or launching a home-business from scratch. My goal was simply doing whatever it took to pursue my real “passion” which was being a stay-at-home mom.
