Find Your Support System

Cheerleaders Before you make a big change in your life it is a good idea to find yourself a support system. Starting a diet, whether it is the Atkins diet or a different one, is going to require you to change the way you are currently eating. It is possible that there will be times when you find yourself struggling. That is why it is important to have people who can help motivate you and encourage you to keep going.

One of the first things I learned about the Atkins diet was that it would require me to make a lot of big changes with how, and what, I eat. Since I had never been on an actual diet before, I felt that I could not know for certain how well I would do with it.

Right now, I am very motived to lose weight. I am actually looking forward to finding out if Atkins works for me, and what this experience will be like. What I don’t know is if I will be able to keep this positive outlook for the whole diet, or if I will reach a point where I am tempted to give up. This is why I wanted to make sure I had a support system in place.

A good support system is going to include people who you believe would be willing and able to help you out when you are struggling. You should select people who you are comfortable with so that it won’t feel strange to ask them for support when you need it. Your friends, relatives, or spouse might not be aware that you are in need of some help. You may need to directly ask for some encouragement from them.

It will be helpful if you choose people who you feel you can be completely honest with, and who you can count on to really check in with you. If you have someone who is going to remind you to eat when you are supposed to, and who will ask you for details about what you ate, this can be extremely helpful. It makes you accountable to that person, which can be a helpful motivator for you to continue the diet.

It is not unheard of for people to start a diet with their spouse. My husband is not doing Atkins with me, and I am fine with that. He is still going to provide me with support by helping me figure out food choices, and by sometimes making me a meal that works with this diet plan.

I have two friends who are on the Atkins diet right now. One friend is doing Atkins with his wife, and they started a few weeks before I did. My other friend started Atkins with his father, and they began the day after I started this diet. I can count on both friends to encourage me if I struggle with this diet. Their success will provide me with motivation to continue, even if I hit a point where I want to quit. I can provide the same support for each of them.
