Finding Frugal Furniture

two seats Traditional methods of furnishing a home can get quite expensive. But of course, it doesn’t have to be that way. Fall is a great time to start thinking about furnishing your home, and you may find some great deals out there, as people are ready to nest down for the winter.

Here are some place to find frugal furniture.

Craigslist. I recently found a Pottery Barn piece that was current and practically new. I had been admiring it in the catalog. The original retail price was $120 plus shipping. The poster wanted $50 total.

Freecycle. This is hit or miss, but you can usually find some real gems, all for free. Large items, such as dining room sets are usually available, because the folks giving them away are grateful to have some one remove them from their home. Many time thrift stores and charities won’t take large items.

Home improvement stores. Check out the clearance racks in the middle of the store. There is usually lighting, seasonal, decorative and small furniture for 50 to 70 percent off.

Habitat for Humanity Home stores. Another hit or miss place, the organization sells items they have removed from homes as well as overages donated by contractors and retail stores. I spotted a high-end high boy there with a tiny scuff mark for a fraction of the new price.

The Curb. You know I am surprised that no one has come up with a chic furniture store called The Curb. In my case, I mean look for furniture that has been discarded out on the curbside. This is a chic pastime in New York City, and in these frugal times, it is gaining popularity as something cool to do. Just be careful of anything upholstered, because it could be harboring mold or bed bugs. Ewww. Wooden dressers, bedroom sets and kitchen tables seem to be usually available.
