Fit Mind, Fit Body

Did you know that a fit body and a fit mind go hand-in-hand? True overall health includes not just your physical health but your mental health as well.

I have been reading several articles over the course of the past month that pertains to mental health. Not only are we seeing Americans struggle with physical issues—cancer, diabetes, heart disease—but many are also dealing with mental health issues.

Some blame poor physical health. After all, if you suffer from a physical ailment, you are more susceptible to becoming depressed. Others blame our economy. People are without jobs, struggling financially and so it hits them psychologically.

No matter what the cause, just as important as keeping a fit body is maintaining a fit mind. Too much focus on one without the other really doesn’t provide overall good health.

Some think that Americans are too quick to medicate themselves. But I have read a couple of articles on people not wanting to fall into the stigma sometimes associated with mental health issues, so they actually try to ignore the symptoms and don’t get the help they need.

Is medication a requirement for everyone? Not necessarily. But some of the people who would benefit from it are not getting it.

We have to be willing to face the serious health issues our country is facing, both physically and mentally. We have to be willing to take a good look at our own overall health and assess if we need some to make some changes. Then we need to take steps to do something about it.

Don’t just focus on your body; you need a fit mind as well. You can look great on the outside but be suffering terribly on the inside. That is no way to live. There is more for you than that.
