Fitness in Your 20’s

Fitness tends to take on a different life when you are in your 40’s, compared to those in their 20’s. So I am starting a series on fitness across the decades, starting with the 20’s and ending with the 50’s.

Ideally, fitness should begin while you are still in your 20’s. When you develop healthy habits early on, you are more likely to continue them into the later years. There are generally two groups of people in their 20’s, those that don’t feel they need to incorporate fitness right now and those that are avid workout buffs.

Those who don’t believe fitness is necessary right now might feel pretty good about the way they look. But we have to remember that fitness is about more than how you look on the outside. Are you healthy on the inside?

Even the skinniest person could have clogged arteries. So don’t be so quick to think that if you look good on the outside, it’s all good on the inside.

Fitness has to be about more than just your outward appearance. When that is ingrained in you early on, you understand benefits that extend beyond looks and get to the real heart of the matter, your health.

You should also take advantage of the extra energy and strength most people in their 20’s have. You can develop great workout habits now that will be much easier to carry on as each decade passes.

Ideally in your 20’s you should be able to work out at least five days a week. Each workout should be approximately 45 to 60 minutes long. You could divide that in half between weight training and cardio.

Now I have talked about good habits but let’s not forget bad habits. It is also during this decade that some bad habits are started such as smoking and eating unhealthy. You might be able to down a bag of Doritos now but it will eventually catch up to you. So start healthy lifestyle habits while you are in your 20’s and you will stand a better chance at them lasting a lifetime.
