Fitness Musings: Why Do You Get Out of Bed in the Morning?

I got into an argument yesterday. I know I shouldn’t let myself get into these arguments, but occasionally someone says something to me that just makes my nerves twitch. I was talking to a friend who listed a whole host of reasons as to why she couldn’t exercise regularly. She was shoveling blame on to everything from daylight savings time to the fact that she can’t function without coffee in the morning.

Life is Hard

Life is hard. I know that. I have a difficult time with meeting all of my obligations on a day-to-day basis. We’ve had medical crisis, kids demanding our time, animals demanding our time, family and home obligations not to mention overextending myself on numerous commitments in various areas including devoting time to a multitude of pursuits from my quilting to scrap booking to substitute teaching in my local school district.

There is no such thing as having enough time – there is making time for what you want to do. If you want to exercise, if you want to get fit and if you want to pursue any objective – you don’t wait till you have the time, you make the time. Thus, the title of this blog: why do you get out of bed in the morning?

Do you wait until you wake on your own? Do you wait for the time to be right to open your eyes? Or do you get up to an alarm clock because you need to get up at a certain time in the morning? I would hazard a guess that for most of us – you wake up to an alarm clock, one that allows you to make the time you need to get things done in the morning.

Making Time

I get annoyed and frustrated when people tell me they would exercise if only they had more time or they will when they get the time. Time does not come to those who wait, it comes to those who seize it and take advantage of their opportunities. It comes to those who make the time for the things they need.

So the next time you find yourself putting something off until you have enough time, ask yourself – will the time really present itself to you or do you need to make it? If it’s a case of making time, what is holding you back?
