Fitting in the Spring Cleaning

With three young children and a work-at-home job, it can be difficult to get the spring cleaning underway. As much as I would love to take a weekend to just complete it all at one time, that is nearly impossible. So I find myself sneaking up on the spring cleaning here and there as I can.

Today, I actually started with a bit of the actual cleaning part of the spring cleaning. I have been organizing and de-cluttering along the way in the last two weeks, but outside of normal day to day cleaning, very little deep cleaning has been done. Yesterday, for example, I rearranged my daughter’s room and did a couple of repair and organizing projects there, such as hanging up a princess painting and organizing all of her hair clips on a piece of pretty ribbon hung near her closet.

Isn’t it funny how the house can look ten times worse than normal when you start pulling things out to organize? I try to let the extra mess serve as inspiration to keep going.

Anyway, back to today. While a nice friend was over visiting and our kids were playing happily I got out the bleach and the water and attacked one kitchen cabinet and the surrounding wall and counters. I emptied the entire cabinet and then got to work. While this might not seem much, it makes me feel so much better to know that at least that one little part is clean, disinfected and completed. If I can do a cabinet a day for this entire week, I should be done by the weekend.

Breaking up the tasks into small pieces means that I can fit the cleaning in as I have the opportunity. I can stop to read a book about a world entirely colored pink to my daughter, give extra hugs to my son and still get the two loads of laundry done on time.
