Five Days to an Organized Pantry: Day 1

muffins Do you want to have a more organized pantry? Stick with me. Let us take just five days to completely overhaul the pantry and develop an easy system of rules that will keep it that way. With an organized (and well-stocked pantry), you’ll never have to worry about missing an ingredient. Just open your pantry and find what you need to make your meal.

Day 1: Know What You Use

If your pantry is like mine used to be, there are probably several things in there that haven’t seen the light of day in months or maybe even years. At the same time, does it always seem as though you are running out of certain things?

The way to combat this issue is to sit down and figure out what it is that you actually use, and then stock enough of those items, while at the same time eliminating the items that are just taking up space.

For example, we are in a phase where we are going through a lot of tomato soup, evaporated milk and peanut butter, so I make sure I keep on top of those items and stock a good amount of them. In comparison, the boxes of risotto mix have just been sitting there taking up shelf space, so they can go.

The family routine and tastes change, so you should revisit your pantry to make sure that it still makes sense. If your stuffing kick is long over, or the kids have outgrown putting ketchup on everything, then change your pantry to reflect that.

Filling the pantry with food that you don’t often use is a very common mistake.

Once you figure out what you really use, get rid of the stuff that you don’t (or at least move it to a less accessible cabinet or closet) and create a grocery list of items that you need to stock. Don’t forget to toss away anything that you come across that is expired.
