How old are your eyes? The new DS game, Flash Focus promises to train your eyes and to sharpen your momentary vision, your peripheral vision, hand-eye coordination, and dynamic visual acuity. The game explains what all those mean and how they are important. Although the game is rated E for everyone, it’s a hard game for younger children. The activities get very fast and challenging. If you have young children who frustrate easily, I wouldn’t buy this game for them. For you though, it’s fun.
Ideally, you train your eyes once a day for fifteen minutes. Just like in Brain Age, there’s a calendar that keeps track of your training. The more you train the more activities you unlock. Also similar to Brain Age, your results and progress are tracked and graphed for you. You can only keep track of four people though, which doesn’t work so good for our family of five.
Many of the activities are sports related. The game says that focus power is a skill that top athletes have and utilize. Focus power means how fast you can see moving objects. You swing at pitches, not only do have to see the pitch, but have to time your response. In boxing, you dodge punches, and hit the other guy’s gloves as quickly and accurately as possible. Football and soccer activities are also included.
Another game is Box Tap. You have to very quickly tap boxes as they turn red. It’s not even a second and it gets quicker as it goes along. In symbol order, three symbols flash on the screen in any of the 12 boxes on both screens. You have to remember each symbol and type them in the order they appeared. All the symbols may be a “C” and you have to remember which way they faced, upside down or left or right. In Number Flash, numbers flash very quickly on the top screen. At first it’s a two digit number, but it goes up to seven digits.
All the activities are quick, so boredom isn’t a factor. It’s fun to challenge yourself and compete against your best scores. When you are done training, the DS guides you through eye relaxation exercises that feel great to tired eyes
