Focusing on Family

I truly believe that one of the areas in which America is failing the most is with the family. Families are becoming less and less important in today’s society. American culture teaches that being out in the world is so much more important than being with one’s family. Life in America focuses on education, work, sports, television, music, movies, cars, and money, just to name a few things. While none of the things I just mentioned are bad or evil, they often grab one’s focus in life over more important things, such as family.

Spending time together as a family is such a vital piece of a working, loving, and communicating family. How can a family function properly if they never spend any time together? How can a family member know the needs of others in the family if they barely pass each other in the hall throughout the day? How can families rejoice with one another in times of happiness if they are not around each other? Whether one spends time with their family eating breakfast, playing a game, having a picnic, or going for a walk the essential thing is to spend time with one’s family. Families are an extremely important support network. A family cannot operate at its fullest potential when the family members are not involved with one another.

There are some unique ways that Christian families can not only spend time together, but also in devotion and service to God. The Christian family can (and should) pray together, study God’s Word together, and attend worship together. They can also visit orphans, widows, or others in need together. A fun way to spend time together as a Christian family would be to bake cookies or some other type of treat for the elderly or shut-ins at your congregation. Then, also as a family, one could deliver the treats. What are other ways a Christian family can spend time together in service to the Lord?
