Free (And Legal) Song Lyrics

It is a great phenomena that there is at least one song to which everyone knows the wrong lyrics. For me it has always been “Bad Moon on the Rise,” or at least to the delight of my kids, “There’s a Bathroom on The Right.” For the longest time, I really did think those were the lyrics. Now I just sing the song that way whenever I want some giggles.

Another song that often stumps people and leaves them arguing in the car for at least ten or twenty miles of scenic roads is Manfred Mann’s “Blinded by The Light.” I don’t even want to get into the obscene things that song sounds like it is conveying. (The actual lyrics are: “Blinded by the light. Wrapped up like a deuce, another runner in the night…”

Take an artist such as Dylan. I love Dylan, yet who really knows what the heck he sang most of the time. Oh I could get enough of the words to understand the meaning of the song, but there are some lyric passages where he could be talking about giving his grandmother a haircut, for all I know.

The Internet is a great tool. There are many occasions when I would google a song to try and find the lyrics. Unfortunately, that didn’t always work. For one thing, it wasn’t very accurate. It seems that there are indeed a lot of people out there who are looking for those right-handed bathrooms. Another problem is that we don’t always know enough about the song to get a good search term in. Imagine if I searched on what I thought the lyrics were for that Manfred Mann song. I would get all sorts of interesting websites based on my keywords.

And there is always the issue of copyright. Lyrics fall under the copyright laws and should not be reproduced in their entirety without permission.

Fortunately, such misconceptions can now be cleared up pretty easily. Yahoo now has what it claims to be the largest legal database of song lyrics, with more than 400,000 songs represented. Yahoo generated money from ads on the site and in turn passes on some of that money to the copyright owners of the lyrics.

So check out the website by clicking here. And if you happen to come across a song called “Lucy in The Sky with Glasses,” don’t fret. They are the actual lyrics of one of the “oldies but goodies.”

What is your “wrong lyrics” song?
