Most people have very strong feelings about Christmas music. Either you love it, and cannot get enough of it, or you hate it with a passion, and rush to change the radio station whenever a Christmas song is played. In general, I cannot stand Christmas music. However, I have learned that what makes me cringe isn’t necessarily the music itself, but the sheer repetition of it. It turns out that I do enjoy Christmas music that is an original song, created and preformed by modern artists.
Looking for some non-traditional, original, Christmas music that sounds good and has a beat you can dance to? Target has a selection of fourteen Christmas songs on their website that you can download for free! You can pick out a couple of songs that you like best, or just download the whole, entire, playlist, whatever you prefer. There are a variety of genres to choose from. “Perfect Gift” by Natalie Hemby is a mellow, country Christmas song. “Toy Jackpot” by Blackalicious tells a story from the viewpoint of a young child, who is super excited about Christmas morning. The song has a hip hop beat, and playful lyrics. Coconut Records, a solo project by actor Jason Schwartzman, who was formerly involved in the band Phantom Planet, is on this list of freebies, with a song called “It’s Christmas”. This playlist has pop songs, rock songs, Christmas songs that groove, and more. My favorite song on the list is by Guster, and it is called “Tiny Christmas Tree”.
