Two of my children are at that age where extracurricular sports and other activities are coming in to play. Some of these activities can costs thousands of dollars per year for each kid. That is a lot of money that could be spent paying down debt or for other expenses such as food or rent. Don’t worry, though, if you can’t keep up with the costs but still want your kids to be able to have the various valuable experiences. There are a number of ways of getting these things for free.
Try School Sponsored Activities
Schools usually offer so many different extracurricular activities for free. There is everything from after school sports, martial arts, fine arts, music, theater, leadership classes and more. If you aren’t familiar with what your school offers, check with the school office or website.
Your child may also be eligible for extracurricular activities and programs that are within your school district, if not necessarily at your school itself.
Try Library Sponsored Activities
Your local library may have some fun extracurricular activities available, especially when school is out. From Science in the Summer to cartooning, get friendly with the library calendar. Most community libraries will also consider requests. Ours started a chess club when we asked.
Try Church Sponsored Activities
Our church offers a number of extra curricular activities, such as children’s choir (free voice lessons), softball, VBS, sports camp, camping weekends and more. You don’t even need to be a member of the church in order for your kids to participate.
Try Community Sponsored Activities
Check with your local township, and you may find a lot of different things that are free for children of residents, including baseball and softball, summer camps, free music lessons, free art classes and more. The offering will vary according to where you live. Just as with library sponsored activities, you may be able to request something new.
