Freshen Your Home for Spring

Have you been to Target this week? The discount retailer is having a huge sale on plastic storage totes, shelving units and a slew of other items to help you organize, as you tackle your spring cleaning projects.

In addition to the storage-related items, Target is offering deep discounts on slipcovers for sofas, loveseats and chairs. At first I wondered how slipcovers tied into spring cleaning, but then I realized that if you have furniture with dark upholstery, adding a slipcover with a soft floral pattern or solid pastel could easily freshen up the look of your living room.

If you don’t have enough money to purchase slipcovers for all of your furniture, simply replace velvet or chenille throw pillows with ones made from light cotton or silk. You can infuse your living, family or bedroom with a touch of spring by using creamy fabrics on furniture accents. If you are a little more whimsical, then consider using fabrics that feature spring-themed motifs, such as flower gardens, bunnies, birds or butterflies. These themes work especially well in a bedroom where you can feature floral patterns on duvets, pillow shams or bedspreads.

Another way to freshen up your home this spring is with fruit and flowers. Not only is this an easy way to add color and life to your living area, it is also fairly inexpensive. Visit a local greenhouse or check out the garden area at your local big box discount retailer and purchase bouquets of colorful fresh-cut flowers. Tulips, lilies, daffodils, daisies, and violets are sure to give your home the lift you are looking for. Arrange the flowers in vases and place them on foyer tables, kitchen islands, dining room tables, end tables, bathroom counters, and bedside tables.

If your decorating budget is really tight, then stick with fresh fruit. Fill bowls, platters, or tall glass vases with lemons, limes, or oranges and place them around the house. If you don’t want to deal with fresh items, then opt for silk flowers or faux fruit. The artificial options can also add a punch of color to a room and you can enhance them by placing them near citrus-scented candles, oils, or incense.
