Friends: His, Hers, and Ours

Going out with other couples or having guests over to your house is not always fun and easy when you are married. Just because you have a group of friends that you hold dear does not mean that your husband will feel the same about them.

My husband and I graduated from the same high school during the same year. We know mainly the same people from school. We dated beginning our sophomore year and basically had the same friends.

However, after high school we attended two different colleges and now work in two different schools. Therefore our friends are now separate. My girlfriends from high school and I still talk and get together once or twice a year. They have now married and have children.

While my husband likes my girlfriends, he is not well acquainted with their husbands. Get togethers can be awkward for him and all of the other men because us women are carrying on and being silly like old times and they have no memories to recall. Due to this, most of our gatherings are now women and children only.

Likewise my husband also has his own group of friends. Some are married some are not. Some are likeable, some I find myself trying hard to get along with.

This same story can be seen and heard from with many couples and television families. The woman can barely tolerate her husband’s obnoxious friends and he can hardly stomach going out with friends and their sissy or uptight husbands.

The main show that comes to mind when I think of this situation is Home Improvement. Tim always has a comment to make about Jill’s friends and she never likes his.

While this situation is far from mine because I can get along fairly well with most of my husband’s friends, when it comes to friends we do seem to have his, hers, and ours.
