Want to have a fun way to celebrate the day without spending a lot of money? Here are some fun ideas that you can use to celebrate, Cinco de Mayo.
If you are planning a party, you can make some frugal choices without compromising the fun. Stick to a simple and low cost menu. Corn cakes are easy and frugal to make, as are the traditional fish tacos. Don’t go crazy on exotic spices or exotic food. A simple dip along with nachos can fill everyone up as an appetizer.
Consider having a pot luck Cinco de Mayo party. Ask everyone who is attending to bring one dish, and keep track of who is bringing what, so you can avoid having duplicates of items. Not only will this be a frugal way to have a party, but it is also fun to see what everyone brings, and it fosters a sense of community at the party.
Go easy on the decorations. You could easily spend $40 on festive decorations at the party store. Instead, buy some inexpensive streamers or tissue paper to decorate. Get the kids involved in making decorations. The guests will think that it is cute.
If you need extra tables or seating, consider borrowing what you need instead of buying or renting it. Beside asking friends and family for tables and chairs, consider asking your church or local organization if you can borrow some items. Even if you have to pay a fee or want to make a donation, the amount is sure to be less than what it would cost you from a rental place.
Alcohol can play a big part of a party’s cost. My family doesn’t drink, so this isn’t a big consideration for us, and I don’t know the comparisons for let’s say cheap beer versus expensive beer. However, if you do want alcohol at your party, you can consider the following. Why not make a big pitcher of sangria? This way you can have a tasty drink and stretch the cost of the alcohol? Another idea is that instead of pot luck food, ask your guests to BOB (bring your own booze).
