I just came across a cool article about tables make from books. I have always wondered about ways to make something out of nothing. I have explored furniture made from pizza and delivery boxes but somehow it never looked sturdy or sanitary. They do serve as good supports for temporary bookshelves though.
I’ve looked at furniture made from plastic or wood crates as well too, but it’s just appeal to anyone over 21. (You can use them as the base of a bed though without anyone ever knowing they are under there. Just make a platform out of the plastic crates, put down the box spring and a dust ruffle, then the mattress!
But after seeing this blog and the picture of these tables made from books, my mind began to swim with the possibilities. If you can build a desk and a side table from old books, you can build a reading bench from books too. You can build a bookshelf from old encyclopedias. You can make book shelves from books too. There are many ways to recycle books into useful furniture and home decor pieces.
I caution you against getting carried away though. Too much of a good thing can get well… tacky. You certainly don’t want to go to the local thrift store and clean out their entire inventory (getting a thousand or so books for about $100.00) though it may be tempting. You probably won’t want to attempt to make a bed or sofa from old books, though with the right books or cushions, it can be interesting.
Still one well made recycled book coffee table, a piano bench made of music books, window seat reading nook supported by leather bound books can be considered unique and creative.
Caution: Be aware of the amount of dust and mold that old books can attract or carry with them.
