Frugal Unique Costumes for Halloween

In my collection of Frugal Halloween ideas I came across some really adorable costume ideas that seem more unique and original than others. I wanted to share them in case you wanted to try them out too. I think we might be utilizing a few this year with five kids! Talk about winning costume contests!

Want to be a basket of laundry?

Grab a sweat suit in any color you want. Take an old plastic laundry basket and cute a hole in the bottom that a child can fit through. You want the basket to fall somewhere just above your hips. The hole should be big enough to fit through, yet small enough that it won’t fall on it’s own. Fill the basket with laundry, strewn some over the sides and either glue in place or just allow to hang over. You can glue dryer softener sheets all over the sweat suit and even glue a sock to the bottom of the pant leg as if it got stuck there. Another cute idea is to place an empty bottle or box of detergent in the basket with all the clothes.

Want to be Mother Nature?

I saw this and thought it was adorable. Any “outfit” will do, but one with a long flowing skirt is a really good touch and adding a vest to the outfit will make it a bit formal.

You will need to find silk flowers and silk plant leaves in any colors you want. The more the better.
Glue the leaves and flowers all around the skirt and vest. Placing the flowers on the leaves makes it look like they are growing that way. You might also add a mask – a good one to use is one that only covers part of the face – they eyes typically, and if you choose to get one, decorate that with the remaining flowers and leaves. Gather twigs from your backyard and create a nest out of them. Use wire to secure the nest. Place a craft store bird in the nest. Add some filler or peat moss to make it look more realistic, in fact gluing some around the skirt and vest are a nice touch also. Attach the nest to the child’s head using a nature colored stocking cap or other type of hat. Beret’s work great for this.

Want to be static cling?

I thought this was a cute idea too. For this costume you can wear whatever you want. A solid color is a better idea though. Either glue or use safety pins and attach anything you want to the clothes you are wearing. Think funny – underwear, socks, etc.) Glue or attach some fabric softener sheets as well. Another cute idea is to use some hair spray and gel and get your hair to stick up all over the place. How funny is that?

Do you have any funny or unique costume ideas to share? Ever worn something so bizarre and won a contest with it? Please share!
