We certainly have our decorating cut out for us in our new house. For the first time, each of the children will be able to have his or her own room. Previously, the two oldest shared a room, while the baby was sleeping in our room and sharing my dresser for his clothes. I am really looking forward to being able to give the kids each a room that is uniquely theirs, but it all has to be easy on the budget, of course.
There is a lot to be said about paint. It is a pretty frugal way to go, especially if you know how to get it for a low cost, or in some cases, for free. Paint instantly brightens up a room and makes it clean and fresh. And it is something that you can do that isn’t permanent, so there is no need to shy away from fun ideas. Wall paper border is another frugal way to go, if you know the special secret for using it.
You can use your kids hand prints to decorate a room. Just pick out some fun colors and go crazy. The kids will love being able to personalize their spaces, and visitors will be charmed. Plus, it will be fun to see all of those little hands on the wall and watch how quickly your children’s hands no longer fit on the prints.
There are a couple of ways to make this idea work. You can pick the primary colors and let them print up a whole wall. Or, you can pick one accent color and have them print up a border about the height of a chair rail across all of the walls. Or for something really fun, have them put their hand prints or foot prints on the ceiling! This one will require some patience and either a tall person to help lift the kids up high enough, or a sturdy ladder, But, the effect is surprising and cute.
Want the look of those cute wall decals without the price? Find a roll of removable wall paper border instead. The clearance racks at the home improvement store have these all of the time. These borders get discontinued often, and the store is often left with single rolls that don’t offer enough for a traditional around the whole room border. Look for a fun kid’s print or character print. You can cut out the individual pieces and then stick them on a wall or walls to decorate.
