Trick or treating is what most kids wait for each October. Being able to go and ring a doorbell of a neighbor and receive a treat is a tradition no child wants to miss.
But how do you hold all that candy? Is there a frugal way to create a trick or treat bag or bucket that can withstand the roughness of a child?
There are a few frugal ways to create trick or treat bags that are not only practical, but loads of fun to make and really great to show off.
Trick or Treat #1
Save your plastic ice-cream buckets, or ask a friend or relative to keep their for you. They are really handy because they already have a handle attached to them making carrying them quite simple. Allow the kids to decorate the ice cream buckets with markers or for a bit more fun, paint on eyes with glow in the dark paint, or just use regular paint to make your pail look like a pumpkin or a ghost or some other scary creature. You can do much more with these buckets such as decoupaging pictures from magazines or catalogs, or have even more fun and purchase some inexpensive fabric scraps. As a scrapbooker we plan to cover ours in decorative patterned papers! And there are some pretty cool one’s out there! These are so incredibly fun to make. And don’t forget to make a few extras and place your candy in them to hand out to all the trick or treaters that come to your door! Fun, fun, fun!
Trick or Treat #2
Another really creative way, and less expensive route, and honestly the easiest, plus it holds a lot of candy, is the old pillowcase trick from when we were children!
Just take a white pillow case, or really any color will do and decorate it for the holiday.
We used a navy blue one last year and a green one the year before. The green one had a pumpkin that we painted on it. The navy blue one was decorated with a picket fence and ghosts hovering above it.
You can use puffy paints, or acrylic paints and go to town. Try using glow in the dark paint. It’s fun to work with and is even an added safety feature for the dark trick or treating night. You can even glue on googly eyes on a ghost or goblin, or you can make it “pretty” for a girl by using black and orange ribbons to “tie” around the black cats neck.
Use your imagination, but most of all make it fun. These memories will last your children – they don’t remember the FRUGAL you, they remember the time you spent with them, and how much fun the projects were!
