Fun Trip for Soda Fans

Who says Waco, Texas, has lost its fizzle?

Certainly not the folks who run one of the area’s biggest tourist attractions.

Curators at Waco’s Dr. Pepper Museum are preparing for an influx of visitors this holiday season, and guests won’t be disappointed.

The museum’s Fifth Street location is sprucing up for the holidays by getting its prized collectibles in tip-top shape. The crowd-favorite, “Be a Pepper” bicycle is buffed to perfection, as are the walls lined with glass soda bottles.

Recently, the museum lent some of its vintage 1960s Dr Pepper bottles to set designers to use in an episode of AMC’s Golden Globe-winning series, “Mad Men.” The bottles are back after making their TV debut and are on display for visitors to view.

In addition to the bottles used on “Mad Men,” guests can take souvenir photos of other Dr. Pepper items that have been featured in Hollywood productions, such as the mint-green, rust-covered Dr Pepper vending machine and other diner-type accessories that scored screen time in “Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.”

Locals call the museum an asset to Waco and to Dr Pepper and refer to it as the “Smithsonian Institute of beverages.”

Catchy, but the folks, who run the World of Coca-Cola in Georgia, may not agree with the Dr. Pepper Museum title. After all, in the south, Coke is king.

The hugely popular Coca-Cola museum in downtown Atlanta features anything and everything related to the legendary carbonated beverage.

Visitors to the museum are given the chance to sample more than 60 different Coke products from around the globe. In addition, kids can give the museum’s 7-foot-tall Coca-Cola Polar Bear a big hug after viewing the world’s largest collection of Coke memorabilia. The 20-acre complex also houses a fully-functioning bottling line and 4-D theater, which shows an entertaining and informative flick featuring an eccentric scientist and his assistant searching for “what makes a Coke a Coke.” Finally, each guest leaves with a free 8-ounce bottle of Coca-Cola.
