There are a number of magazines that are dedicated to helping genealogists further their research. Some magazines are specialized, pertaining to genealogy for a particular location, ethnicity, time period, etc. Other magazines are more general, and can be useful to the majority of genealogists. Listed here are five of the most popular genealogy magazines. Prices listed here are effective as of May 27, 2010, and are subject to change.

Family Tree Magazine

According to their website, Family Tree Magazine is “American’s #1 family history magazine”. This magazine is perfect for beginning genealogists wanting to learn how to get started. Topics that have been covered in the past include adoption research tips, finding ancestors in newspapers, immigration, genealogy software programs, and researching Irish roots. Family Tree Magazine is published seven times each year. The current annual subscription rate is $24 plus $3 shipping & handling.

Ancestry Magazine

Ancestry Magazine was published for more than 25 years, but was discontinued with the March/April 2010. Despite the fact that new issues are no longer being published, former issues of Ancestry Magazine are still a great resource for genealogists of any experience level: from beginners to professionals. Topics included Jewish records, fire destruction of the 1890 United States census, online genealogy, using yearbooks for genealogy research, and 1840’s fashion. Former issues of the magazine are available for purchase at $4.95 each, or can be viewed for free on Google Books.

Family Chronicle

Family Chronicle considers themselves to be a “how-to” magazine for genealogists. Again, this magazine is appropriate for genealogists of any experience level. Past issues have covered topics, such as getting the most from the Internet, working with old photographs, collateral records, the history of genealogy, and writing a family history. Family Chronicle is published six times each year. The current annual subscription rate is $27.95.
