General Conference: “A Broken Heart and a Contrite Spirit”

In his talk “A Broken Heart and Contrite Spirit” Elder Bruce D Porter speaks about the importance of having a broken heart. Elder Porter explains that Mosaic law symbolically pointed to the sacrifice that our Savior made to us. The Savior is the perfect example of a broken heart since he submitted his will to the Father’s in all things.

Elder Porter emphasizes that when our hearts are broken and our spirits are contrite that we are open to the spirit. We also recognize our total dependence on God. Additionally we sacrifice all forms of pride in order to have our hearts opened in that way. We should look to the Savior’s example when he submitted to the will of the Father and took on the sins of the world.

Elder Porter points out that a broken heart and contrite spirit are also necessary for repentance. Elder Porters speaks of the ache that comes with godly sorrow and how that helps us to change what we are doing so that we can use the Atonement and repent of our sins. A broken heart can also protect us from sinning, as it helps to put the worldly things around us into a proper perspective. Finally Elder Porter says that a broken heart helps us to feel gratitude for the Savior and the Atonement for our sins.

This talk helps us to see the importance of developing a broken heart and contrite spirit in our lives. It is important to realize the many ways that having a broken heart affects our lives. Sometimes it is difficult to admit our total reliance on God and to submit our will to His, but it is important that we do so. This will help us to find greater peace and happiness in our lives.

I know that the times that I have had a broken heart, I’ve been strengthened by the Lord and been able to meet great challenges that I could not have without the Lord’s help. Additionally I have been able to receive guidance and promptings that have helped me to make the right decisions. Whereas the times I have not had a broken heart, I have had a difficult time accomplishing the things set before me. I hope that you will take the time to read and ponder this wonderful talk.
