General Conference: “Concern for the One”

In his talk “Concern for the One” Elder Joseph B Wirthlin speaks to and about those who may have strayed from the church. He opens his talk by briefly bearing testimony about the call of each new member of the first presidency. He then teaches that Christ has always been concerned for the one. He reminds of the parable of the shepherd leaving his flock and going after the one who is lost. Elder Wirthlin then explains that there are three types of people who are lost.

Elder Wirthlin says that the first type of person that may be lost from the church are those that feel that they are different and do not fit in. They may have isolated themselves or become isolated from their ward, because they are a little bit different and have a difficult time making friends. It is important that we reach out and include them in our activities. Not everyone is going to fit in together.

Elder Wirthlin points out people often become lost because they are weary. He speaks about how many people are overwhelmed with life’s challenges or become discouraged because of the difficulties that they are facing. Many feel that they do not have the strength to continue to come to church. He points out that we can receive additional strength to meet our challenges by coming to Christ. He encourages us to reach out and show concern for those who might be weary.

Elder Wirthlin says that the third group who may become lost are those that have strayed from gospel teaching. They may have made a mistake and no longer feel worthy to attend church. It is important to realize that church is a place to find forgiveness and repent. You do not have to be living perfectly to attend church. It is important to take advantage of the Atonement and return to the fold.

This is a wonderful talk that offers insight on why people may be struggling with church attendance and their testimonies. I think that it also gives us suggestions on how to reach out and help those who may be in these situations. It is important to reach out and help those in need. I hope you will take the time to read this wonderful talk.
