Get Your Birthday Obligations Organized

January is a great month to get organized with all of those birthdays, anniversaries and other holidays that you want to remember. With an organized system, you’ll never be late again. I started this type of system because I had a habit of either forgetting birthdays completely, or only sending out a card or a gift after someone else reminded me that a birthday had past. Not only is this embarrassing, but it gives my friends and loved ones the idea that I don’t care (which I do).

Here are some of the features I have put together in my organized birthdays system.

At the beginning of the year, I pick up a calendar that is just for those special. You can buy a pretty calendar at half off after New Years, or just pick up a free one from a bank, a church, a real estate agency or a garage. Take a red pen and mark down each birthday, anniversary or other date on the calendar, in the appropriate spot. Five days out from that date, make a note to mail a card, if it applies. Also note if a present should be purchased.

I take the calendar apart, punch holes in it and insert it into a three-ring binder (you could also use vinyl binder pages, if you like). Each month has its own page, naturally.

Next, I inset a folder pocket in between each calendar page, and an extra pocket in the back.

Next, go card shopping. Purchase all of your cards up front. This will actually save you money, too, if you buy a large box of assorted cards. Pick out your cards for each event. Sign the cards, address them and place them in the pocket. Leave the cards unsealed in case there is any notes you want to add at the last minute. You can stamp them ahead of time, but be aware that postage rates may change.

In that last extra pocket, place sympathy cards, thank you cards, and extra birthday card s in case you need them. Also include a book of stamps.

As each month rolls around, check your calendar page, pull out the card, seal it and mail it. All done!
