Get Your Holiday Game On

left

It’s the most wonderful time of the year; time to make merry, rock around the Christmas tree and fa-la-la-la in perfect harmony with friends and family members.

The holidays are known for festive get-togethers complete with music, laughter and fun. If you are hosting the clan this year for the holidays, now is the time to get your game plan in order.

While you don’t have to construct an elaborate itinerary of activities, you should have at least a few games on hand, especially if you are hosting a party with young children. Keep the seasonal shindig joyful by having the kids play Pin the Nose on Rudolph or Pin the Beard on Santa. Another option is to purchase a holiday-themed pinata.

Older kids will have a blast playing Santa Says, Holiday Scavenger Hunt or Snowball Toss. The latter involves a blindfold, a basket and a bag of cotton balls. The person, who gets the most cotton balls in the basket at the end of two minutes, wins the game.

For kids with a crafty side, decorating cookies is always a treat. Depending on how many treats are baked, you could have a cookie eating contest too. Following the competitive gorging, gather your pint-sized guests around the piano to play “Name that Christmas Carol.” If you are playing with teens, spice up the game by having each player bet on how quickly they can name the tune. For example, before hitting the first key, ask the crowd of young adults if someone would be willing to guess the holiday song’s title after hearing just four notes. Then, see if another player would be willing to do so in just three notes. The person, who can identify the song after hearing the fewest notes, wins.

Finally, no family gathering is complete without a rousing game of charades. To make the contest a bit merrier, limit the options to holiday-themed characters, songs, phrases, books and movies. Popular picks include “Frosty the Snowman,” “Scrooge” and “Silent Night.”
