Getting December Under Control

Here in my little city, we have a holiday market during the month of December with hundreds of booths and vendors—most of which are small, home-based micro-businesses. As I peruse the aisles of crafts and arts and talents and foods—I realized that all of these small businesses are working non-stop during the month of December. Talking to one of the vendors, I learned that her business was mostly seasonal and that she didn’t see much of her family until AFTER the first of the year. Many of us home business owners are stretched and strained through the month of December and it takes some focus and energy just to get things marginally under control.

From what I have learned from the “pros”—those small home-based business owners who work extra hard during this time of the year–is that it really depends on planning—gearing up for the busy time and making a plan for how to tackle and conquer. Meanwhile, it is important not to lose sight of family and other social obligations. There are still pleasures to be had during this season even if the month feels packed with work.

The woman I spoke with also mentioned that she does everything she can to stay healthy during December—getting as much rest as possible, eating well, hand-washing, and avoiding sick people. She said as long as she stays healthy, things don’t feel too overwhelming, but if she gets sick—things get really tough.

December can be intense and a time crunch for many people—but for the home business owner who has to manage a business and family and seasonal obligations, the month can go by in a blur—planning, perspective and patience can be the tools to get the month under control and get through the challenges!
