Getting Ready for Graduation

Chronicling an entire academic year can be daunting, which is why you should not wait to get started on a memory book for your student, especially if he or she is graduating in the next few weeks.

A graduation scrapbook can be as elaborate or as simple as you wish; however, it should include some main elements, including a timeline of sorts leading up to the major milestone.

Basic graduation memory albums feature photos and memorabilia, while more unique books tell the tale of the student in a story-like fashion. For example, you could chronicle the entire year leading up to the commencement exercises or you could go all out and feature a snapshot of each stage of the student’s life from birth to graduation.

If you choose to create the latter, you need to plan well in advance. You should photograph all major events during the grad’s last year in school, including homecoming, prom, senior week and the senior awards banquet. Don’t forget to collect mementos from each event and consider writing notes to the graduate on different layouts throughout the book. The notes can be personal memories you wish to share with the student or they can be detailed descriptions or observations from each event.

Fortunately, there is no shortage of graduation-themed scrapbook embellishments on the market. Popular sticker designs include mortarboards and graduation gowns. You can also select die cut silhouettes of graduates and school houses. Stamps are another option. Choose ones that spell out the words “congratulations” or “Way to go!” with diploma symbols. Graduation theme frames also add a nice touch. What’s more, you can personalize them with poems and other mementos or you can keep them simple by adding free graduation clip art to create jazzy photo borders. Just remember to not overdo it with the embellishments. Your pictures shouldn’t be overshadowed by decorations.
