Goodwill Hunting and Target

toys If you are a regular reader of the Frugal Living blog, you’ll know that I am a fan of getting things for less by shopping at thrift stores. Going to Goodwill or other stores is always an adventure. My kids look forward to it, too. In fact, we were coming back from Lowe’s home improvement store when our eldest son asked if we could stop by the Goodwill. he knows that they usually have some interesting toys and games, and that he and his siblings can usually get more for their money there.

Yesterday was the jackpot of toy selection, as well as children’s clothing that still had tags. While I didn’t have much time to check out the clothing myself, I did see plenty of moms with carts full of brand new children’s clothing, especially for girls. Racks ready to be put out on the floor seemed to contain a number of brand new t-shirts, two-piece winter outfits and jeans.

I don’t know if you know this or not, but the retailer Target donates unsold merchandise to the Goodwill. That means that if you hit the store on the right day or week, you’ll find a lot of new merchandise. We spotted a lot of Hannah Montana stuff, Christmas items, Dora the Explorer, Scooby Doo and other famous character toys that were still new in the box at our local store.

If you are looking to fill your gift closet or purchase some toys for your own kids, you might want to check with your local Goodwill to see what is available.

Let me tell you that the place was absolutely crowded yesterday afternoon with long lines. Increasingly I have been seeing more and more crowds at the Goodwill. It used to be that on a weekend afternoon there might be one or two other customers. Yesterday, there had to be at least 50 other people in the store.

Happy hunting!
