Great Books for Children Starting School

As children get closer to starting school, you will find them both excited and a little wary, which is perfectly normal. Some children will embrace change, finding school a wonderful experience while other children feel fear and nervousness. In this article, I wanted to provide you with some excellent books that you can read to your child to make the transition from home to school much easier.

-Little School – This picture book is great for four to six year old children, teaching them how to prepare for change. By outlining, everything the child would expect helps him/her feel more at ease and less stressed about starting daycare, preschool, or even kindergarten. Written by Kane/Miller, the illustrations are outstanding.

-First Day Jitters – This book was written by Julie Danneberg, which provides a comical approach to starting school. The illustrations are done beautifully in watercolor and ink, telling the story of a little girl nervous about school. Filled with humor, you and your child will soon be laughing off the school day jitters.

-When you go to Kindergarten – To adults, kindergarten is no big deal but to a small child, it can be a devastating experience. This wonderful book is full of photographs, as well as activities that hit on a number of school situations. The way the book is written, the book will encourage your child to ask tough questions.

-The Bernstein Bears go to School – Everyone loves the Bernstein Bears and this book is no different. In this, the little Sister Bear is scared to head off to school. To make her feel better, she visits with her mom where she finds both old and new friends. This book will teach your child that kindergarten is a great place of fun and learning.
