Growing Families

If you have a growing family, you also have shrinking space. If you aren’t prepared to buy a new home, or simply cannot move right now, what are you going to do? You need all the space you can get, and sometimes you feel like your home is bursting at the seems.

Don’t feel bad. You’re in good company. Many families purchase a home instead to stay in that location for some time. However, families often end up growing more quickly than originally foreseen, even though a move might not be possible. So, where do you put everybody and everything?

You have several options and they all include using the space you have effectively. The first step is purging. Get rid of all that stuff you’ve been saving but never use, or at least move those items out of living spaces and store them in a basement, garage, shed, or attic.

One very effective choice is using as much vertical space as possible. Many people tend to forget or ignore all the square footage above eye level. Add cabinetry, shelves, and tall storage units. Don’t let all that space go to waste.

You might start by using bunk beds, which is a great way to create a lot of floor space. You might be able to squeeze in another dresser or bookcase or other hidden storage, while still having room to move around. Trundle beds can help create more space for activity, although they will cover floor space at the end of the day.

You can also opt for furniture that doesn’t take up as much room. A love seat and a straight back chair provide as much seating as a three cushion-sofa, but they not only take up less space literally, they also make a room look less crowded than bigger pieces do.
