Happily N’ever After (2007)

I have looked forward to seeing this movie ever since it was first advertised. I love spoofs on fairy tales. I must say, though, that while this one was moderately cute, it wasn’t as cute as I’d hoped.

Fairy Tale Land is the place where all the fairy tale characters live. It is run by The Wizard (George Carlin) whose job it is to keep the balance between good and evil. He is assisted by Munk (Wallace Shawn) and Mambo (Andy Dick) When it’s time for the Wizard to take a golf vacation in Scotland, he leaves the two in charge, thinking that surely they can’t mess up things too badly. All they have to do is watch the scales and make sure that evil doesn’t get the upper hand.

Meanwhile, it’s the night of the prince’s ball. Cinderella (Sarah Michelle Gellar) is eagerly awaiting her invitation, and Rick (Freddy Prinze Jr.) servant at the castle, delivers it personally so he can see Cinderella. He can’t understand why she’s so hung up on the prince; Rick knows him personally and thinks he’s selfish and stuck-up. But Cinderella has a pretty major crush and it won’t be easy to talk her out of it.

When Frieda, the wicked stepmother (Sigourney Weaver) arrives at the palace, she discovers a secret staircase and follows it to find the room where Munk and Mambo are working. She steals the Wizard’s wand and upsets the scales, determined that evil shall triumph after all. But she never anticipates that the good guys will still come out on top.

My favorite moments of the movie: When the prince is looking for Cinderella in the woods and when Rumplestilskin is learning how to take care of a baby. There were a few comical moments, that’s true.

Overall, it was decent, but you’re certainly not missing out on anything if you don’t chance to see it.

This film was rated PG.
